Adding your own eBooks to the Kindle app on the iPhone
I have been using the Kindle app on the iPhone for a while now, but the one thing that really bugged me was that I cannot add my own eBooks which I have purchased and dowloaded from other locations than the Amazon Kindle Store to this great app..
After a bit of searching I have devised a way to do this myself using some 3rd party apps and some hocus pocus, jiggery pokery or skulduggery (delete as applicable). It is not perfect and the books are not synced with the Kindle store or available on other Kindle
devices but it's a means to an end :)
You will need:
- 1x iPhone / iPod Touch (Jailbroken)
- A tool to browse your iPhone (I used iPhoneBrowser 1.93, as this is the only one which seems to work under x64 Windows 7) - http://code.google.com/p/iphonebrowser/downloads/list
- A tool to convert your eBooks to PDF. Mine are basically all LIT format so 'ABC Amber LIT Converter' worked a treat - http://www.processtext.com/abclit.html
- A toot to convert the PDF files into the prc extension that Kindle likes, I use MobiPocket Creator - http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/Download...
First, download the Kindle App from the AppStore.
Now find the eBook(s) you want to put on your phone.
Open your PDF conversion tool:
Import the eBook into the program - in this case, click Open and choose the file you want:
Select PDF from the Export list and click Save As, choose your save location and click 'Save':
You now have the PDF ready, so open MobiPocket Creator, and click Adobe PDF from the import list:
Browse for the PDF file, and then click Import:
You now have the file imported, click 'Build' at the top of the window
Click 'Build' on the final window, and you should arrive at a confirmation screen:
Thats all the conversion done :) You can select the option to open the folder, and click Ok. You only need the .prc file in this folder, copy it to your desktop for easy access if you wish. You can close both converters now if you have not already.
To add the book to the iPhone, connect your phone(obviously) and open up iPhoneBrowser.
You want to navigate the phone to /User/Applications/:
In here you will have a lot of folders with hashes for names, expand these and one will contain the Kindle.app folder (Mine was in 31B07266-BB01-47E1-A6A1-034A7E706FA7 but I have no idea if these hashes are phone independent), select the Documents/eBooks folder in here:
You can drag and drop your eBooks into this eBooks folder:
That's all there is to it! Like I said, it is not perfect, you can't select an image for the book as far as I can tell (If you find a way, please do comment) and there are a couple of other small things. But overall it is very convenient to have all my eBooks on the Kindle App :)
